We Have Always
Moved.
A history of 125 families, traced across generations and the geography of the Indian subcontinent.
Like almost all of the families out there, we also have a story that is close to my heart. It starts at a point in time when Tipu Sultan was still a king.
His father invited 125 Brahmin families from Kashmir to assist with administration. My family is believed to have been one of those.
When the sultanate was dismantled, these families were ostracized. They were forced to migrate again, eventually finding homes in Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Despite this move, we were still not fully included. The exclusion was such that no family would marry into ours, forcing internal relations for generations.
Our identity shifted with the land. Surnames evolved to sound local. We became Madhvacharis, and then Deshastha Brahmins those who lived on the 'desha'.
Our journey taught us to value relationships. We had no choice but to stick together when nobody was willing to accept us. We thrived through every trial with a song in our hearts.
Now spread across the globe, we carry forward the legacy of thriving against all odds. We live lives built with our own hands, finding joy in the smallest things.
